David learned ot repress his emotions, burying them beneath a cool, calm exterior. So despite his charm and charisma, some find him to be emotionally distant and reserved.

This was twice what he was making for teaching at Yale.He continued his studies, but his ambition for the academic life was gradually slipping away. In 1987, after being cast in a film by Henry Jaglom, he quit Yale to pursue and actor's life.

I n his first film "New Year's Day", he played Billy and thinks of the character as a version of himself. After he retuened to New York and studied with an acting teacher named Marsha Haufrecht at the Actors' Studio. There, he learned how to cry, yell, scream or laugh, opening himself up emotionally.
